FAQ

If you have any question about the course then you can find it here.

If you were to ask just about anyone online today on how to create a website, more than likely they are going to tell you to use WordPress. If youve never created a website before, then youre probably thinking what is WordPress and how does it work? I know when I first started out online, I thought creating a website was going to be a huge ordeal taking several hours to do. However what I later realized was that WordPress actually made website creation very easy, and today I can now create a website in about 30 seconds. Before I get into the details on how WordPress works, let me first explain a little bit more about what it is. What Is WordPress WordPress is basically a software that manages content people put on their websites. Whether you want to start a blog about a passion you have, or start an e-commerce store and sell physical products online WordPress is the place to go. What you may not know though is there are two different WordPress programs you can choose from. 1. WordPress.com: Create a free website or blog 2. Blog Tool, Publishing Platform, and CMS While you may think they are the same, there is one major difference you want to be aware of before you go choosing one or the other. Whats The Difference Between WordPress.com: Create a free website or blog and .org? With both softwares doing the same thing (which lets you easily create content online) the main difference between the two is who is hosting your website. Blog Tool, Publishing Platform, and CMS: Here YOU will host your own blog. You will have to pay for hosting with this option, but in the end it will be something that you own. I highly urge you to choose this if you are considering trying to make money online, or want full ownership of your website. WordPress.com: Create a free website or blog: Here you dont have to worry about paying for hosting, download software, or manage anything. However you will be very restricted as to what you can and can not do. I see this as more of an option when you just create a website more for fun, rather than creating one to start a business or talk about a passion you have. So with Blog Tool, Publishing Platform, and CMS, you will be able to have your own domain name, upload custom themes and plugins to give you a lot of flexibility over your website, and you will be able to rank in search engines better. With the WordPress.com: Create a free website or blog version you wont pay for anything, however your domain will have WordPress.com: Create a free website or blog in it, and you will not be able to fully customize your theme or add any plugin you want to it. How Does WordPress Work? WordPress is a system that lets you create pages or post without having to learn all that complicated HTML code. To do this, youll simply log into your account and enter the dashboard of your Website. Once youre here, you then will either click new post or page which is where you can start writing content. From here you could sell products from Amazon, start a blog about a topic your love like dogs, or create an e-commerce store and sell physical inventory. Also in the dashboard settings, you can do things like change the appearance of your website or theme, add plugins which gives you more versatility with your website, and also use widgets to help with the navigation of your site. I dont want to get into the specific details of what you can do and how to do it, but basically if theres anything you want to add to your website to make better with over 46,000 plugins you can make and shape your site to however you see fit. Why Is WordPress So Popular? You might be wondering up to this point whats so special about WordPress? Isnt it just a simple program allowing you to create a website without HTML? I would say its far from just a simple program, as big companies like EBay and GM use it. Also around 50,000 WordPress blogs are being launched daily, and 25% of the top one million websites use WordPress. But why does everyone use it including these big named companies? Here are a few main reasons WordPress is rated number 1. Its easy to install and use. WordPress only takes around 5 minutes to install, letting you quickly get to work on your website. Also with easy to use navigation and the ability to customize your site at a click of a button its no wonder people from the age of 18-80 years old are using it. You have thousands of themes to choose from. Blog Tool, Publishing Platform, and CMS comes with around 1,600 different FREE themes that you can choose from. If thats not enough, you can also install third party themes from places like Theme Forest or StudioPress. With a theme being the main design of your website, with literary thousands of them to choose from you can make your website look any way you want. Plugins give you a lot of versatility. Plugins are basically like apps on your iPhone, that you can install into your website to increase its functionality. With over 46,000 plugins, you can add just about any feature you can imagine to your site. It can be something to help you with SEO, an automatic back up system, or a way to slideshow your images. Safe and secure to use: WordPress is constantly updating their system to keep their security and maintenance up to date. This is very reassuring so that you wont have to worry about hackers getting a hold of your site, or having your site crash without any backups. So all in all why is WordPress popular? Its safe, easy to use, and gives you free tools to customize your site to any way you want. Final Thoughts I hope by now you have a much better understanding as to what WordPress is, how it works, and why so many people in the world use it. The thing I really love about WordPress is its basically a blank canvas giving you the tools to create a website about anything and for any reason. If you want to create a website about cats, dogs, or just have your own personal diary then WordPress can make this happen.
Web hosting is almost like renting out space for an apartment. Except here, you fill the apartment with files that contain HTML, CSS and Server code of your website. Practically, hosting is the service of providing space on the Internet for websites. And what better than Managed Hosting that takes care of every inch of server optimization for a WordPress website. So what is Managed Hosting? Lets find out. In our previous blog post on Everything You Need To Know About Web Hosting, we discussed types of web hosting, prices, how to choose the right host, some of the best hosting services out there and more! In this one we decided to write about one kind of hosting that is specifically designed and optimized for WordPress websites Managed WordPress Hosting. WHAT IS MANAGED WORDPRESS HOSTING? As the name suggests, Managed WordPress Hosting is designed and specialized for WordPress websites exclusively. Several web hosting providers have chosen to specialize in WordPress hosting due to the increasing popularity of it. Everything is Managed, you dont have to get your hands dirty! Managed hosting is usually an extension of dedicated hosting. The required hardware is owned by the hosting provider and is leased to a single client. It differs from other forms of dedicated hosting the day-to-day management and maintenance of the servers is handled by the hosting provider rather than by the clients themselves. Their technical teams are trained to manage WordPress servers, and the best part is, these teams know the ins and outs of WordPress blogs. So when you are talking to their customer support for any issues, you will be getting an instant solution. If you have been searching for the right WordPress hosting providers, you probably would have noticed that prices of managed WordPress hosting are quite higher than the average shared hosting. Do you really need such an expensive solution? Well, if you are a small blog, then NO. If youre a small business or own a high traffic website then you should probably be looking at managed hosting services as one of your options. Well tell you why! WHY ISNT SHARED HOSTING THE RIGHT CHOICE? Shared hosting probably isnt the right option for your WordPress website for a number of reasons. Although shared hosting is definitely more affordable than managed hosting, there is a catch to it. The accounts are cheap because hundreds (sometimes thousands) of users are put on the same server. This leads to the so-called bad neighbor effect. Bad Neighbor Effect In Shared Hosting The main server, which hosts hundreds of accounts, has a fixed amount of memory. If one website exploits more than its fair share of the available memory, all the other sites hosted on the same server will experience issues because of this one bad neighbor. This essentially means that one troubled website has the potential to cause thousands of unrelated sites to load slowly and sometimes, not at all. Whats worse is that not only does the memory get shared, so does the Bandwidth, processing power and storage. Websites on shared hosting cannot be dependable. Due to both resource restrictions and the fact that shared-hosting environments must be able to run a large variety of applications (not only WordPress), theyre very often much slower than their managed WordPress hosting counterparts. What Happens When You Choose Shared Hosting? You need to do updates manually with most hosts. Backups and speed optimizations only available through third-party plugins. General security mechanisms are available, for extra security you will have to use third party plugins. No additional database optimization is available with shared hosting. Youre usually limited to a set number of visits. Your website can go offline for a while if you go over it.
Yes, WordPress is a free CMS (Content Management System). But, if you want to make a live website or blog using WordPress, then it may cost you. You have two options if you want to make a live website using WordPress. You can use WordPress.com (a company that provides managed website using WordPress) or use WordPress CMS on your own web host. The community of WordPress is WordPress.org. You can download many themes and plugins for your WordPress CMS on WordPress.org for free. What are WordPress plans? There are three choices. If you want to use WordPress.coms services then please check here. If you want to use WordPress in your own system, you will have to pay for the hosting company (good basic Shared Hosting like that of Siteground will cost your $3.95 per month). You can get a free theme from WordPress.org. So, the cost of your website will be the cost of your hosting. Now, if you want to use a Premium WordPress theme on your website, instead of the free ones available at WordPress.org, in a self-hosted plan, it will cost you an extra $59. You can find great looking Premium WordPress themes on our website. So, your cost will be the cost of the hosting (monthly or yearly fee) +$59 (one-time fee) for the WordPress theme.
Wordpress scales well, and probably far better than the perception. I will say that it's always a bit of a challenge to acquire expert-level knowledge when you've already put the oft-repeated basics behind you (caching, cdn, innodb, etc, and the more recent additions to that variety of advice include nginx and fastcgi cache). I reached a point where I realized it was far more cost-effective to invest in more hardware than to spend huge amounts of time squeezing small performance gains out of a theme or plugin's wp queries at the subatomic level. No mistake, make sure your code and setup is fundamentally sound (and more importantly -- understand why), but beyond that, make sure you understand what your next steps will be on the hardware side. Once I started doing that, scaling got a lot easier. The other thing you should do is perform your own tests and draw your own conclusions from them. This is now very easy. Spin up an EC2 instance, put in the wp install (and theme, plugins, etc) you want to test, point something like blitz .io at it, and monitor what happens (and learn how to do that). Repeat as necessary, kill the instance when you're done. That won't tell you everything, but you'll learn more from an hour and a few bucks than you will from months of sifting through the conventional wisdom of others (indeed, past a certain level, you MUST do this, because you will find a lot of advice does not come from people with much hands-on experience with high traffic sites). As I think back at all I've done to squeeze performance out of wp over the past several years... the ease with which you can deploy practically any hardware you need has been the game changer. Many years ago, I had a lot of uncertainty about how practical it would be to keep scaling far into the future. The path into the future is much more clear now.
To create a website, here is the process I would follow: Technical Requirements The first and foremost requirement for a website is a domain name and hosting account. You can visit providers like GoDaddy or Bluehost to get one. That is pretty simple process and they can help if you call them. Next step, If you decide to use a cloud based service like Shopify or Weebly, you just have to sign up and follow their user guides which is the most easiest and best method for non-technical people. Alternatively, if you decide to use a Content Management System like Wordpress, Blogger, Drupal, Joomla etc. you will need some learning to do. Most importantly for Wordpress, you need to explore and search for a good theme and required plugins to achieve your envisioned outcome. Lastly, if you have some knowledge in HTML, CSS, Bootstrap and JQuery. There is a lot of help and ready made themes available to build a good looking website be it using CMS or plain HTML. Functional Requirements This is the actual planning phase of the website layout and content. STEP ONE: You need to list what are the different page or the structure of the website is depending on your requirements. Page like Home, About Us, Product/Services, Contact Us, Privacy Policy are common. However, you can add or remove as per hierarchy. I recommend using a tool called FreeMind for this which helps you organize the entire plan of your website in a mind map. STEP TWO: Select the layouts of each page types by deciding the placeholders. For example, you may want a video banner or an image banner at the center of home page, or a call now image/button somewhere on the top etc. Define the size and place of every element that you may need on each page (including the text content) STEP THREE: Look for the right images on image galleries and stock photos. Some of the links are ShutterStock, Pexels, Adobe Stock Images etc. You have to choose the right images based on the dimensions you planned. Sometimes, step 2 & 3 may interchange based on the images you find. Images grab attention more than text, so it is important to choose apt images for your content. STEP FOUR: Based on your service offering or website content you can start listing the keywords you think are important for people to visit your website by searching on Google. Therefore, you can start planning the keywords using some online tools and start writing content relevant to each page. STEP FIVE: This is almost the last step where you integrate your layout, images and content together into a perfect and good looking website. Additional Requirements (Optional) Planning the security of the website by using SSL certificates, CAPTCHA for forms, strong passwords etc Planning SEO and optimizing the website content time to time Linking Social Media channels including a Blog will help generate better traffic
